I was lucky enough to be invited to the Scarborough Mayor Making on Thursday 17th May 2018. This year’s Mayor is Joe Plant and his focus is on ‘Healthy Heart’s. It is an event I had never been to before and really didn’t have a clue what to expect. I really enjoyed meeting with the Mayor, his family and getting to witness him becoming Mayor for the year ahead.
I was invited due to the fact I’ve had a heart transplant and I am now running a successful business here in Scarborough.
With this in mind, it got me thinking about chocolate and its health benefits.
A lot of people will always say to me, “I can’t eat chocolate I’m on a diet.” Well, the truth is chocolate, can be eaten as part of a balanced diet and there are some health things connected with it.
We recently launched our 80% dark chocolate bar with cocoa nibs and it sold really well, so we are currently making some more.
This ‘Power 80’ chocolate bar contains 63% less sugar than our normal dark chocolate bars.
The health benefits to dark chocolate are thought to be as follows:
- Full of antioxidants
- Contains nutrients
- Could improve blood pressure
- Decreases the risk of stroke
- Lowers some cholesterol levels
- Lower the risk of cardiovascular disease
- May protect your skin against the sun
- Improves brain function
- It makes you feel good!
So, I guess you are now asking, “How much is healthy amount a day?” Well, it is recommended that you eat between 30g and 60g a day. That is half of one of larger chocolate bars or one of our small handbag sized bars.
